The Relay Race

For the last couple of weeks we’ve been drafting and re-drafting our discovery playback deck, straightening up the story we need to tell so that it’s clear. It’s also helping us create shared understanding amongst the team members, given we all joined the team at different times.

We completed our fourth (and hopefully final) draft last week, and it received a good reception from our leadership – who also provided some helpful feedback. It feels like we’re better aligned as a team too. It’s lovely to see Frankie talking about the problem and feeling the material in the office.

It has required a lot of conversation, and some times needed people to be vulnerable in stating what they don’t know. I’m grateful to the people who did that.

I’m feeling quite vulnerable too. Out of everyone on the team, I’ve worked in the NHS for the shortest amount of time. There are facts and people and things and norms I don’t know about, and I’m constantly learning.

I’m not autonomous yet, which means I need to ask for help or pointers, and I worry I’m moving more slowly than I need to be.

I probably need to keep being vulnerable in team spaces and saying when I don’t know things. (Some times I don’t know what I don’t know.)

But luckily everyone on the team is friendly. They’re good people and I’m grateful for the chance to work with them.

Other things

• My previous team launched Extract last week, and Chanelle showed me the analytics, showing that it’s getting good usage and helping people create data faster. Leading on that was good fun (and a reminder I can do my job?).
• We cycled from Epsom to Lancing, trying out my partner’s new bike. It was lots of fun and it was a beautiful day to boot.
• The veg box has been offering up some treats, and I’m constantly blown away by how tasty the produce is.
• I’m glad the heatwave is dying down this weekend, it is way too hot.
• Hanging with friends on Saturday and having a bougie brunch on Sunday helped me shoo away the black dog this weekend. Scrambled eggs inside a croissant – who knew?!
