Story setup and the central theme of resolve

Revelation opens with the party grieving a fallen ally and facing a planet on the edge of destruction. They board the airship Highwind to chase down Meteor, the ultimate destructive magic, before it wipes out the world. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has described the game's core theme as resolve, with Cloud and his companions confronting their own convictions on the way to a final battle that decides the planet's fate.

The team frames the game as the culmination of three decades of Final Fantasy VII storytelling, pulling together the many spin-offs and interpretations that have grown around the series into one closing chapter.

Open world exploration with the Highwind

The entire planet is freely explorable using the Highwind airship. You can drop in anywhere by parachute, moving from the air to the ground without breaks in play. With Meteor descending and the massive Weapons attacking, the world is full of simultaneous conflicts, so you choose where to go, who to help, and in what order. Some of those choices can affect aspects of the characters' individual stories.

Reimagined locations shown so far include the sun-soaked Mideel archipelago, the warrior nation of Wutai, and the frozen Northern Continent.

New playable characters and the FITS system

Combat keeps the hybrid system from the earlier games, letting you switch between real-time action and Tactical Mode, which freezes time for planning. Square Enix describes this version as the system in its perfected form, with new playable characters and new abilities.

  • Vincent Valentine: A gunslinger with fast gunplay and beastly transformations he can trigger with a button press.
  • Cid Highwind: A pilot who can rush in for single-target lance strikes or hit groups with area-of-effect attacks.

The two also share battle synergies that open up unique combos. The new FITS system, short for Functional Integrated Tactical Suitwear, lets you equip outfits that grant fresh movesets inspired by classic Final Fantasy jobs such as Black Mage and Warrior. Summons return as well.

Save data bonuses from the earlier games

If you have save data from the first two entries on your console or PC, you unlock summon materia in Revelation. This carries over automatically based on the games you have played.

How to catch up before launch

The first two games, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, are out now on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Both are also sold together as the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade & Rebirth Twin Pack for $59.99.

Both titles include a Streamlined Progression feature with options like unlimited HP and MP, an always-full ATB gauge, and easier weapon ability acquisition, which lets newcomers move through the story faster before the finale arrives.

With the conclusion now dated to Spring 2027, the wait for the end of Cloud's journey comes down to a season rather than a question of whether the trilogy will finish. Expect a firm date and a rating closer to launch.
