What Sidekicks do in Fortnite

A Sidekick follows you across most modes, including Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, Save the World, and Fortnite Festival. Only you and your teammates can see it, so it never reveals your position to opponents. Sidekicks are immune to damage for the same reason, since enemies cannot interact with them at all.

What makes them feel different from the old Back Bling pets is reaction. Your Sidekick dances when you use a dance emote, looks happy after a win, and turns sad when you get knocked down. You can pet your own companion, and each one has its own emotes. You can also rename a Sidekick as often as you like.

The one big catch is appearance. Each Sidekick can be customized only once. After you confirm a look, the colors, patterns, and styles are locked permanently. If you want the same Sidekick in a different style, you have to buy it again, and Epic allows repeat purchases for exactly that reason.

How to get Fortnite Sidekicks

There are three main ways to add a Sidekick to your collection. The route depends on the specific pet you want.

Buy from the Item Shop

Most Sidekicks rotate through the Item Shop. The shop refreshes daily at 00:00 UTC, and pets usually appear for a few days before cycling out. If you miss one, it typically returns within a month or two, so missing a rotation is not permanent.

Open the Item Shop tab from the lobby, pick the Sidekick you want, and confirm the purchase if you have enough V-Bucks. The pet lands in your Locker right away, and you can equip and customize it from there.

Unlock through the Battle Pass

Some Sidekicks are tied to a specific Battle Pass and never enter the shop afterward. Peels came from the Chapter 6 Mini Season 2 pass, and Remus is a reward on page 5 of the Chapter 7 Season 1 pass. Holee Skye and Ice Prince are part of the Chapter 7 Season 2 pass. These pets are locked to their season, so the only way to get them later is if Epic chooses to bring them back.

Claim free grants for matching Back Bling

A few Sidekicks are granted free if you already own the original Back Bling version of that pet. Owners of the Bonesy Back Bling get the Bonesy Sidekick at no cost, Kitsune Back Bling owners get the Kitsune Sidekick, and Empress Back Bling owners receive the Empress Sidekick. The grant is automatic. Check the Sidekicks tab in your Locker to confirm it arrived.

Bark Voyager was given out through the Shattered Live Event, so it did not require V-Bucks at all. Event-based Sidekicks like this are tied to limited windows rather than the shop.

How to customize a Sidekick

Customization is where Sidekicks get personal, and where you need to be careful. You can change colors, patterns, and styles, but only once per Sidekick. After you lock in a look, it cannot be changed unless you buy that Sidekick again. The exact options differ by pet. Peels, for example, changes ripeness (underripe, ripe, or overripe) instead of fur color, while the dog Sidekicks change coat patterns and collars.

Step 1: Open your Locker from the main menu and select the Sidekicks option on the left side of the screen. Pick the companion you want to customize.

Step 2: Browse the available colors, patterns, and styles for that pet. Take your time here, because this choice becomes permanent once confirmed.

Step 3: Click Next Step to preview your choices, then hold Lock-In to confirm them. This is the point of no return for that pet's appearance.

Step 4: Enter a name for your Sidekick or use Randomize Name for a suggestion, then select Finish Customization. Names allow up to 16 characters.

The name is the one part you can always change. To rename later, open your Locker, select the Sidekick, click the three dots icon, and choose Rename. If you want the same pet in a second style, you can buy it again, and each copy keeps its own separate look.

Sidekicks keep cycling through the Item Shop the same way Kicks and Jam Tracks do, and Epic keeps slotting new ones into Battle Passes. The roster has grown well past its launch lineup, with collaborations pushing into Marvel, SpongeBob SquarePants, South Park, and more. If a pet you want is not in the shop today, it is very likely to come back around, so there is no rush to grab everything at once.
