Every Egg Pattern in Monster Hunter Stories 3 and What Hatches From Each One

All Things How March 13, 2026
Source

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection launched on March 13, 2026, and with it came a massive roster of Monsties to collect. Every one of them starts as an egg sitting in a Monster Den, and each egg has a distinct visual pattern tied to its monster genus. Learning to read those patterns is essential if you want to target specific Monsties rather than hauling random eggs back to the Stables.

Quick answer: Each egg's color and pattern corresponds to its monster genus — Bird Wyvern eggs have uneven splotches, Fanged Beast eggs have spikey splotches, Brute Wyvern eggs have horizontal zigzag stripes, Flying Wyvern eggs have horizontal tiger stripes, Leviathan eggs have wavy horizontal stripes, and Elder Dragon eggs feature a star pattern. The first time you pick up an egg from a genus, your companion Rudy identifies only the genus. After you hatch one of that species, future pickups will identify the exact monster.

How Monster Dens and egg collecting work

Monster Dens are caves scattered across the world map, and they continuously respawn. Inside each den, you'll find a nest of eggs along with some gatherable items. You can only carry one egg from each nest, and you need to reach the den entrance without losing a battle to keep it. You can carry up to 12 eggs at a time across all dens, and any unwanted egg can be returned to a den from your inventory.

When you pick up an egg, Rudy comments on its gene potency. No glow means a fairly potent egg, a golden glow means very potent, and a prism glow means highly potent. You can swap eggs by gathering from the nest again, but most dens have a finite number of swaps. Each swap also increases the chance that a sleeping monster in the den will wake up and attack you.

To hatch eggs, visit the Stables at any Camp or at your home base in Azuria. You need open slots in your Monstie Roster — up to twelve eggs can be hatched at once.

Monster Den rarity types

Den Appearance Map Icon Description
Grey Rock White cave Standard Monster Den with a normal egg pool.
Gold Rock Gold with sparkle Rare Monster Den — slightly better odds for rare eggs and valuable genes.
Platinum Rock Blue with sparkle Super Rare Monster Den — higher chance of rare eggs and top-tier genes.
Grey Pillar Rock Grey with sparkle Endangered Den — appears after defeating an Invasive Species. Contains a specific endangered Monstie egg.
Grey Rock with eggs on top Green cave Retreat Den — spawns when a monster retreats from battle. Only contains eggs of that retreating monster.

Strange phenomena inside dens

Occasionally, Rudy will alert you to a strange phenomenon when you enter a den. These events are more common at night and include three possible outcomes: two nests with unlimited gathering attempts, Barrel Felynes running around (they vanish quickly, so grab them fast), or extra gathering spots that tend to be rarer than usual.

How egg patterns map to monster genus

Every egg's visual design is determined by the genus of the monster inside. Once you learn the pattern language, you can identify genus at a glance before Rudy even speaks. Here's the shorthand:

Genus Pattern Style
Bird Wyvern Uneven splotches
Fanged Beast Spikey splotches
Amphibian Vertical line splotches
Carapaceon Vertical bubbly lines
Temnoceran Vertical lines
Brute Wyvern Horizontal zigzag stripes
Piscine Wyvern Round splotches
Leviathan Wavy horizontal stripes
Fanged Wyvern Vertical zigzag stripes
Flying Wyvern Horizontal tiger stripes

Deviant and subspecies unlock conditions

Many of the most powerful Monsties in the game don't appear in standard dens. Instead, they require you to raise a base species' Ecosystem Rank to a specific threshold and meet habitat conditions. Ecosystem Ranks progress from D through S as you interact with that species through the Habitat Restoration system. Deviants universally require Rank S, while subspecies and rare species typically unlock at Rank A or B.

⚠️

Deviant eggs like Dreadking Rathalos, Grimclaw Tigrex, and Bloodbath Diablos have very specific habitat requirements beyond just reaching Ecosystem Rank S. Pay close attention to the number and type of monsters sharing the habitat — missing even one condition will prevent the egg from spawning.

The launch roster of Monster Hunter Stories 3 includes 85 Monsties spanning 11 genus types across four major regions: Azuria, Canalta Timberland, Tarkuan, and Serathis. While some fan-favorite monsters from previous Stories games didn't make the cut, the elemental swap system lets you change any Monstie's element, effectively multiplying the roster's functional variety well beyond the raw count. Title updates may expand the roster further, as dataminers have noted placeholder data for additional monsters like Molten Tigrex and the Metal Raths.
