Newport Police Department’s annual report shows drop in violent crime but big increase in nuisance cases

By SHAYLA ESCUDERO/Lincoln Chronicle NEWPORT – There was less violent crime in Newport in 2025 but an increase in abandoned vehicles and nuisance related enforcement, according to the Newport Police Department’s annual report. The report provides an overview of department operations, crime data and community outreach efforts. The police department has 22 sworn officers who cover a little over 10 square miles and serve 10,650 residents and thousands of visitors. According to the data, violent crime and thefts were down in Newport compared to prior years while ordinance-related issues skyrocketed.
