✦ Refrakt: 45 — Tuning In

Monochromatic Aberration May 10, 2026
Source

I haven't really been writing recently. My routine's a bit out of whack—that's how it's felt all year. Occasionally, I'll slip into gear, but mostly it's been a series of false-starts and playing catch-up. Lately, when I sit down to write, I find myself oddly distracted. It's felt mostly like I've been succeeding in spite of myself. It's not a question of diligence, but one of direction.

I think part of this comes from having new, higher standards for myself. I've proved to myself I can study well, make photography I'm happy with, sit down and write my 500 words a day until something comes out of the mist—but that's not really enough anymore. I know I can lock in , do the work ; now I need to know where it's going.

This is Refrakt , a bi-weekly newsletter from Ian J. Battaglia on curiosity, creativity, and (hopefully!) insight, through the lens of photography, writing, study, art and beauty, and my life.
