Even today it is easy to spot the two former parts of Berlin, as well as the differences in architecture, lifestyle, and wealth of the two sides. But what is not as easy to experience is the type of food that the people and in the socialist part of the city. Luckily a solution is presented in the form of Der Volkskammer.
Der Volkskammer, which is German for 'the people's space' is a restaurant dedicated to the times of the DDR, and shows that in every way possible. From the East German flags hanging outside, the retro decor, to of course the classical DDR food. Think of meals like a Jäger Schnitzel, which is a slice of hunter sausage fried in breadcrumbs on a bed of macaroni with ketchup. Also popular is the desert which was once marketed as a competitor to hot dogs; Kalte hund (or cold dog).
All of this and more can be found, while you are stared at by portraits of Erich Honecker, the man who erected the wall.
