The hulking sculpture bLINK , unveiled in 2025 in Gothenburg, rises in vivid magenta above a railway bridge, sharply contrasting with the structure beneath it. At first glance, it could be mistaken for a coerced industrial relic, as if a chunk of infrastructure had been painted and left behind.

Created by German artist Katharina Grosse, the massive structure - roughly the size of a three-story building - stands amid a tangle of roads and tracks. The vivid magenta form resembles a giant spotlight, with paint extending onto the ground to suggest the spread of its beam. Its title, bLINK , alludes both to the major West Link rail project, which runs through the area, and to the idea that passing travelers might miss it in a blink.

Some locals praise the sculpture’s boldness, but much of the reaction remains critical. The work draws attention for its roughly $2.5 million in public funds. Many also feel the sculpture has little connection to Gothenburg, with its abstract form standing apart from the infrastructure.

bLINK has become a recurring target for graffiti, with vandals repeatedly adding pink penis motifs that echo the sculpture’s loud color. One of the culprits, who described himself to local media as an art-school graduate, dismissed the sculpture as “provocative meaninglessness” and said the drawings offered more than the artwork itself.
