As in folklore, elves, dwarves, gnomes, goblins, kobolds, fairies, bugbears, etc. etc. etc. are all part of a single, vaguely-defined family of creatures without clear borders between them. Characteristics and powersets are specific only to an individual, and the correct answer to questions like “so are you an elf or a gnome?” is “what are you, a cop?”
