TP-Link Tapo wants to replace your front door key for $249

Of all the smart home products you can buy to help automate your home, I feel smart locks are one of the hardest sells. Getting the right setup for your particular door always seems like it needs a lot of time and effort.

TP-Link is trying to make it a bit more accessible by launching a new range of affordable smart locks in Australia. There are two models: the new Tapo DL105 ($249) and the existing Tapo DL110 ($299).

Both locks offer six ways to get inside: fingerprint recognition, a backlit keypad, the Tapo app, Bluetooth, a compatible voice assistant, and two physical backup keys. The fingerprint scanner stores up to 100 prints and unlocks in under half a second.

The keypad supports peek-proof entry, so you can type decoy digits before or after your actual code. It's a small feature, but it makes a real difference if you're worried about someone watching over your shoulder.

Managing access

Where the Tapo system earns its keep is in access management. Set permanent codes for family members, scheduled codes for a regular cleaner or dog walker, and one-time codes for tradespeople.

Every entry is logged in the Tapo app with a timestamp, and the lock will alert you if someone triggers the automatic lockout after too many failed attempts.

Both models use a removable rechargeable battery rated for up to a year on a single charge, with a USB-C port for emergency top-up.

If you want to round out your front door setup, pairing one of these with the Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro would give you a solid combination of smart lock and video monitoring.

DL105 vs DL110: what's the difference?

The DL105 is the entry-level model, rated IP54 for weather resistance and certified to BHMA Grade 3.

It also includes a built-in doorbell and auto-lock. The DL110 steps up to IP65 weather resistance and BHMA Grade 2 certification, with a matte zinc alloy finish.

In practical terms, IP65 means the DL110 is fully dust-tight and handles direct water jets from any direction, making it a better fit for more exposed door locations.

IP54 on the DL105 still handles rain and splashing water without issue for a standard install.

Both work with Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings, so they'll slot into an existing smart home setup alongside something like the Aqara Camera Hub G350.

Neville Wang, Managing Director at TP-Link Australia and New Zealand, said the new model was designed to lower the barrier to entry. "The DL105 makes it easier for more Australians to get started, combining convenience, security, and dependable performance in one accessible solution."

The Tapo DL105 is available now for $249. If you want the flagship DL110, that's also available now for $299.
