Roblox has announced that it will introduce two new age-based account types for young users on the platform and expand parental controls.

The safety of young users on Roblox has been a concern for some time, especially due to certain serious issues emerging on the platform. Recently, the Roblox CEO was called to resign due to inadequacies in child safety policies. Following the backlash, Roblox announced that it would take additional security measures to better protect its young audience.

New Age-Based Accounts and Advanced Parental Controls from Roblox

The first of the two new age-based accounts announced for young users on the platform, Roblox Kids , will be mandatory for children aged 5-8. Users aged 9-15 will be required to use Roblox Select. Both new account types will closely align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with the user's age. Additionally, teams have begun reviewing games on the platform to determine which games should be available to users under 16.

If a player starts with a Roblox Kids account, they will automatically transition to Roblox Select when they turn 9 and to a standard account when they turn 16. On the content side, a process will operate that dynamically selects games by verifying the developer, conducting comprehensive content assessments, and setting additional limits.

In Roblox Kids, all communication features will be turned off by default, and the design will include a different background color to indicate the account type to other users. Roblox Select will have a similar visual adjustment and offer limited access only to games labeled 'Minimal' or 'Mild.' Furthermore, the default communication settings for ages 9-15 will remain unchanged. As you may recall, the company also introduced an age verification requirement for in-game chat access.

Thanks to improvements in parental controls, parents will be able to manage content ratings, communication settings, screen time, and spending limits. These innovations were made to bring transparency to which games children spend time in and who they interact with. While the update provides a new control opportunity for parents, it also maintains access to certain controls until the child reaches 16.

Parents will also be able to block specific games, manage direct chat, and approve the child's entry into games that are normally inaccessible in the default account type.

The new account types, which will be available in June, will bring age verification, account-level default settings, content ratings, continuous moderation, and expanded parental controls. Statements from ConnectSafely CEO Larry Magid and Roblox Safety Chief Matt Kaufman on the subject are as follows:

Larry : “By combining age assurance, stronger creator responsibility, and parental controls, Roblox is helping to set a higher standard for how platforms can better protect young users while preserving positive online experiences.”

Matt : “With the launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we are fundamentally changing how games are discovered on our platform. Safety is not a static feature; it is a journey that evolves as the child grows. While no system is perfect, these age-adaptive accounts are designed to take the guesswork out for parents and align users' experiences with their age.”

Meanwhile, things remain turbulent for Roblox. Russia has banned Roblox, accusing the platform of distributing extremist materials. What do you think about the new account types and expanded parental controls announced by Roblox? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
