FAA to Recruit Gamers as Air Traffic Controllers
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set its sights on gamers in an effort to close the long-standing personnel shortage across the United States. The agency is targeting gaming enthusiasts for air traffic controller positions in its new recruitment campaign.
The FAA has launched a new recruitment campaign targeting video game players. The published YouTube advertisement emphasizes the importance of this critical role with fast-paced visuals and the promise of a six-figure salary. This move is seen as part of the FAA's efforts to fill thousands of vacancies that are said to affect air traffic safety.
Officials state that gamers are natural candidates for this job due to their ability to process information quickly, focus for long periods, and make accurate decisions under high pressure. It is believed that the demographic familiar with best aircraft games and simulators can easily adapt to the pace in the control tower.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told The New York Times: 'To reach the next generation of air traffic controllers, we must adapt. Focusing our recruitment efforts on gamers allows us to tap into young adults who possess many of the technical skills needed to be a successful controller.'
FAA to Close Personnel Shortage with Gamers
This recruitment drive comes as the FAA continues to face a serious shortage in the number of certified controllers. As of early 2026, the agency has more than 11,000 fully certified controllers nationwide; however, this figure remains well below the target of 14,663 set for full capacity.
Officials state that recruitment has improved in recent years. While the FAA has added approximately 300 certified controllers since September 2024, it also managed to reduce the hiring process from 13 months to about six and a half months. Improvement was also seen in training results; the attrition rate dropped from one-third to one-fourth.
Despite this progress, the agency says more work is needed. Factors such as retirements, long training requirements, and resignations continue to slow the increase in personnel numbers. It is hoped that players who have gained experience in realistic titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can speed up this process.
Hiring gamers is seen as a way to accelerate the process. FAA officials note that many current controllers already have a gaming background, and almost all recent academy graduates identify themselves as 'gamers.'

Aviation consultant Michael O’Donnell added: 'When you hire someone with gaming experience, especially someone who has dealt with air traffic control simulations, they start one step ahead. However, this does not replace talent, discipline, or the necessity of making decisions under pressure.'
The agency is now shifting its strategy to prioritize reaching out to gamers rather than traditional channels like university fairs. Officials point out that only 25% of controllers hold a traditional university degree.
The new hiring period will open on April 17, 2026, and will be limited to 8,000 applications. The FAA expects this number to be reached within a few days.
