The project director of The Last of Us Online has revealed that they learned the game was cancelled only 24 hours before the official public announcement. It is difficult to imagine how devastating this was for a project that had been in development for 7 years.

As you may know, the Last of Us Online project, also known among players as Factions , was cancelled in 2023 when Naughty Dog shifted its focus back to single-player story-driven games. It was even rumored that former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida enjoyed the project when he played it. Now, striking details about the process have come from the project director, Vinit Agarwal.

Seven Years of Effort and a Game That Was 80 Percent Complete

Speaking as a guest on the Lance E. Lee Podcast, director Vinit Agarwal shed light on the behind-the-scenes of the process. Agarwal stated that the game was 80% complete and was 'very close to being finished.' He noted that with the increased interest in online games during the pandemic, Sony allocated large budgets to this project, but strategies changed once life returned to normal.

According to Agarwal's statements, the studio had to choose between this experimental project and the new game directed by Neil Druckmann. As a result, Naughty Dog chose its 'bread and butter,' which are story-driven games.

The director described receiving news of the cancellation of a project he had spent 7 years on just 24 hours before it was made public as a 'soul-crushing moment.' Shelving the project while it was so far along was a huge disappointment for the entire team.

On the other hand, new projects inspired by Last of Us Online, such as Terminal War, are also on the way. Do you think Naughty Dog made the right decision by cancelling this project? Let's meet in the comments!
