According to new information leaked from the industry, the GPU power of the eagerly awaited PlayStation 6 handheld console could surpass Microsoft 's current generation console, the Xbox Series S.

Many details about the PlayStation 6 handheld console have come to light in recent months. Previous claims regarding the PlayStation 6 handheld console indicated that the device would feature impressive memory capacity and a dockable design. Now, a new leak reveals the device's power against Xbox's current consoles and the Nintendo Switch 2.

PS6 Handheld Console's GPU Will Be Better Than Xbox Series S

According to information shared by KeplerL2 on the NeoGaf forums, the PS6 handheld console's GPU is slightly ahead of the Xbox Series S in 'Raster' performance. However, the real difference emerges in technologies such as Ray Tracing and Path Tracing ; according to the leak, the handheld console surpasses the Series S by a 'massive' margin in these areas.

When asked if PSSR3 technology would be better than the Switch 2 's image upscaling technology, the insider information is quite ambitious: 'Switch 2 only uses DLSS 2 (CNN) and some games even prefer the lower DLSS Lite version. FSR5/PSSR3 will offer better image quality than even the current DLSS 4.5.'

PS6 Canis Handheld Console Leaked Technical Specifications

The other technical details of the device, which was leaked under the codename 'PS6 Canis' in August 2025 and is expected to have a high memory capacity of 24 GB, are listed as follows:

  • Monolithic 3nm architecture: Confirmed with modern documents.
  • Backward compatibility: Compatible with PS5 and PS4 generations (PS3 is not mentioned).
  • Input and hardware: Canis includes a MicroSD slot, M.2 SSD slot, haptic feedback, dual microphones, and a touchscreen.
  • Video output: It is stated that the USB-C port has video output capability.
  • Release schedule: Production is planned to start in mid-2027, with a release date targeted for autumn 2027 or early 2028.
  • Power consumption: 15W TBP (Total Board Power).
  • Processor: 4 Zen 6c cores.
  • Graphics unit: 12-20 RDNA 5 Compute Units (CU) running at 1.6-2GHz.
  • Memory structure: 128-bit bus and LPDDR5X-7500+ memory.
  • Performance estimate: Rasterization performance is approximately 0.5x the power of the PS5 (RT performance is expected to be higher than this).
  • Competition: Canis should outperform the ROG Ally X in terms of performance but should not be seen as a total 'beast'.

On the other hand, while Sony continues its work on the main console side, we know that it is focusing on next-generation technologies with projects such as PS6 Project Amethyst. Some reports confirm that Sony is considering delaying the PS6 release date to 2028 or 2029. Additionally, claims that the console may come with a disc-less model are also on the agenda of former Sony executives.

So, what do you think about these claims? Can the PlayStation 6 handheld console really surpass the Xbox Series S? Share your thoughts in the comments!
