Eidos Montreal’s 7-Year-Long Major Project Canceled

The sad truth behind the recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal has come to light. The Wildlands project, which has been in development since the beginning of 2019, has been officially canceled.

Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in Losses

Known by the codename 'P11' as it was the studio's 11th project, this title first came to light in December 2025. However, according to reports, the project had been struggling with major difficulties for years. Throughout the development process, 4 different game engines were swapped, there were serious disagreements regarding the narrative structure, and the budget had already well exceeded the $100 million threshold.

This massive budget spiral also hit other projects at the studio. As you may recall, this financial crisis is also said to be behind the cancellation of a new Deus Ex game in January 2024.

What Kind of Game Was Wildlands?

Leaked images show that Wildlands was an open-world third-person action-adventure game where we controlled a character named River. River was a member of a group of teenagers called 'Spiritbounds' who warded off evil spirits with magic staves. Players could ride a giant mythological creature resembling a deer called 'Redheart' to travel faster across the map.

The game's style bore great similarities to the survival game WiLD , which was developed and subsequently canceled by Wild Sheet Studio. It was so similar that many people thought these two projects were the same.

It Was Almost Finished

The strangest part is that Wildlands was almost finished when it was canceled. Sources state that the game had passed its critical development stages, was in the debugging phase, and was planned for release later this year.

It seems that Embracer Group lost confidence in the project's future and decided to pull the plug, concluding that additional investments would not be recouped. Why the major publisher made this decision so late remains a mystery.
