PlayStation 3 entered our lives in 2006. Thinking about it, it is hard to realize how fast time flies. Despite the age of the platform, Sony has not given up on updating this veteran console. The company released a new system software update, version 4.93, today.

Although it seems like a small step, this update shows Sony's intention to support its retro platforms with security patches against modders and 'jailbreak' operations, even though almost 20 years have passed since its release.

Legendary Console Not Forgotten

If you still have a PlayStation 3 console under your TV gathering dust (or that you are actively using), you will see that a system update is waiting for you the next time you turn it on. Sony released the 4.93 update for all PS3 consoles worldwide this morning (UTC).

According to the short notes released, the 4.93 update requires approximately 200 MB of free space. The focus of the update is stated as 'additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.'

However, the following detail in the update notes is quite critical:

Please note; To play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system requires a refreshed Blu-ray player encryption key. Please update your PS3 system software to the latest version to refresh this key.

This means that you will not be able to run physical discs on your PlayStation 3 console until you install the 4.93 update. In other words, there is a kind of 'software lock' for users who do not perform the update.

Recalling the latest developments in the PlayStation 3 ecosystem, it was announced that Netflix would be removed from the platform as of March 2. This situation saddened retro enthusiasts who especially love watching old content in 4:3 format.

Are you still playing on PlayStation 3? On the other hand, let us remind you that the long-awaited new installment of the survival genre, Subnautica 2, will be opened for early access in May.
