Take-Two CEO: Making Games with AI is Laughable
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke quite clearly about the role of artificial intelligence tools in the gaming world. According to Zelnick, these tools can assist developers in creating assets, but it is impossible for them to create a 'hit' on their own.
The use of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry has been a subject of great debate since the emergence of the technology. Recently, Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology was described by some players as a 'cheap AI filter.' Now, the head of one of the world's largest publishers has shared his thoughts on this topic.
AI Can Create Assets But Cannot Produce a Hit
In an interview with The Game Business, Zelnick emphasized that while the advantages offered by artificial intelligence are undeniable, this does not mean that 'everyone can make a hit game.' Zelnick stated that even if AI makes asset production easier, this does not necessarily lead to a successful game.
According to Zelnick, it doesn't matter much in the end whether an asset is made with the click of a button or six weeks of hard work; in the end, it's just an asset. However, he says human creativity and touch are essential to achieve the quality of massive productions like NBA 2K or EA Sports FC.
GTA 6 and AI Relationship
When asked if projects like Project Genie would facilitate the development process of massive productions like GTA 6 , Zelnick replied, 'not in the slightest.' As in previous statements about Take-Two's GTA 6 development process , he reminded that successful productions are usually backed by large-budget and talented teams.
The Take-Two CEO summarized the topic by saying, 'The idea that an individual could just push a button and create a hit game and get it to millions of players is a laughable thought.' Stating that this has never been possible in the entertainment industry, the CEO pointed to music produced with artificial intelligence. He argued that such songs are listened to once and then moved on from, like a disposable birthday greeting card.
Although there have been rumors recently that GTA 6 source codes have been leaked, Zelnick had also indirectly implied in his statements about the AI strike that generative AI (GenAI) played no role in the development of the game. Do you think artificial intelligence can really make 'hit' games in the future? Let's meet in the comments!
