Xbox Is Bringing Back Legendary Games

During the Xbox Developer Summit at GDC 2026, the Xbox Game Preservation team announced that legendary games will return with brand-new ways to play.

Xbox made a significant impact at GDC 2026, discussing the company's next-generation plans. The Vice President for Next-Gen announced that developers will receive Project Helix devkits or 'alpha versions' next year. This provides a hint about when to expect the next Xbox console.

Xbox Confirmed the Return of Classic Games

Speaking at GDC, Xbox confirmed its commitment to keeping four generations of games playable over the years. As part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations, the Game Preservation team will offer 'new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past.' During the panel, attentive players already spotted hints of games like Fuzion Frenzy and Panzer Dragoon.

The team also discussed 'removing barriers between console and PC gaming for a more seamless cross-play experience.' The Xbox experience is becoming more consistent, which will offer developers a 'unified path to reach more players while helping to lower development costs.'

That is not all; all of Xbox's knowledge in 'building a leading gaming operating system' is moving to Windows this April. The Xbox Mode to be introduced for Windows 11 will allow you to switch seamlessly between productivity and gaming with the familiar full-screen and controller-optimized Xbox experience, while embracing the openness of Windows.

Xbox also mentioned the return of legendary first-party franchises like Halo and Gears of War this year. In addition to this, partner games such as Mixtape from Beethoven & Dinosaur and Crimson Desert from Pearl Abyss are also on the way.
