In recent weeks, the Xbox brand has become the target of criticism following some major changes in its leadership team and layoffs. The new generation Xbox device being referred to as “Project Helix” raised suspicions for many that this might be the last Xbox hardware we will see. This situation naturally deeply affects expectations for the future of the gaming world.

However, at a new internal Q&A event held within Xbox, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that the team remains extremely committed to gaming and will always invest in this ecosystem as long as they are able.

“We Are Looking at the Long-Term Future”

According to an exclusive report shared by Windows Central, during this closed session hosted by Xbox’s new CEO Asha Sharma, Nadella shared important details about the future of the gaming industry under the tech giant’s broad umbrella. While claims that Microsoft expects high profits from Xbox were discussed, Nadella’s statements offered a new perspective on the brand’s future.

Nadella said the following about Microsoft’s permanence in gaming, fueled by 25 years of Xbox brand strength:

“This is why I look at this business long-term. Phil (Spencer) always talks to me about gaming being the largest category of entertainment; so what will be the most comprehensive form of gaming in the future? This doesn’t mean we will stop doing what people do today, which is playing AAA games on a console. The question is about where else we can go to expand this.”

“For me, the gaming industry is a long-term investment. We will continue to invest, and we will always do so. Showing excellence and creativity in execution is in the hands of this team. Software always carries risk, but this is a software process with a lot of creative risk. It’s a very different situation, but we still need to be best-in-class in this regard.”

Bringing Back the Joy of Gaming

Nadella stated that everything the Xbox brand does is about getting to the core of why people love video games. Later in the speech, Nadella touched upon changing trends in our digital world, noting that attention spans are decreasing and consumers are somehow moving away from the active participation model of video games.

Nadella added:

“I look at reports. I see how much our attention is abused… I want us to reverse this. The joy of coding, the joy of playing games; all I want is for us to live in this atmosphere. If we can bring that back, I think the world will be a better place.”

If you have concerns about the future of the Xbox brand, Nadella’s words may have reassured you somewhat. In his view, at least as he conveyed it to his employees, his goals revolve around making gaming a continuously better and more accessible concept for everyone.
