A 24-Team College Football Playoff Solves a Problem That Doesn’t Exist (Michael Bryan. May 21, 2026.) If you have a four team playoff, there will be controversy regarding the 5th and 6th teams. If you have a 12-team playoff, there will be controversy about the 13th and 14th times. So on and so forth. You just push the problem further down the ladder. Funny enough, there were not too many dramatic controversies in the single championship game BCS era (the Oklahoma-LSU-USC mess of 2003 being the notable exception).
