A number of sofas, carpets, tables and a dirty mattress were left either side of Kent Street, under the railway bridge near St George’s Retail Park.

The illegal fly-tip happened no later than the evening of Wednesday, May 20, when the items were seen taped off and declared as an environmental crime scene.

The council confirmed wardens had identified the issue and searched the spot for any incriminating evidence.

The site has now been cleared and an active investigation currently ongoing.

A spokesperson said: “Fly-tipping is an unnecessary blight. The city council offers a free bulk collection for domestic waste, so there’s no excuse for anyone to dump their rubbish in this way.

“Unfortunately, dealing with incidents of fly-tipping continues to be a problem for councils across the country.

“People have a responsibility to dispose of their waste safely, responsibly and legally. Failure to do so could result in a hefty fine and spoils the environment for other people to enjoy.”

Residents can get the city council to collect up to five big household items every two months for free, or pay £22 for a collection of up to five items at any time.
