The mood was sombre for a vigil for Khaleed at DMU's Hawthorne Square on the 11 February.\n\nFollowing the incident, emergency services as well as passing staff and students helped Khaleed, who sustained stab wounds and later died at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Student health workers from DMU who were on placement also reportedly helped treat Khaleed.\n\nPeople gathered, and following a minute of silent reflection, listened to speeches and poetry readings from the vice chancellor, academics, and student leaders from the university.\n\nHelp provide 10 bleed kits for Leicester\n\nCrowds gather at DMU's Hawthorne Square for vigil to remember DMU student Khaleed Oladipo. Photograph: Kaydon Ifill-Fisher\n\nVice chancellor Katie Normington gave a speech where she shared in the community's grief, and gave thanks to the first responders.\n\nKatie Normington said: “Today's event is about bringing together our students, staff and the wider Leicester community to reflect on the tragic events that occurred last week. Khaleed's death has had a very real, sizeable effect not just on our campus but across the city, and we felt very strongly that we wanted to provide a space for people to recognise those feelings. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge those who, from the very first moments the incident took place onwards, have focussed on supporting everyone affected.\n\n“Our thoughts today are with Khaleed's family and friends. For us here, this dreadful event will also remain with us. But while we have all felt shock and grief over the past week, we have also experienced an overwhelming amount of compassion, and we want to thank the people of Leicester for their ongoing support. It is this supportive and inclusive spirit which makes us so proud to be part of the Leicester community.”\n\n## Be part of the story\n\nJoin our free mailing list to get local news and tips in your inbox every week.\n\nSubscribe for free\n\nEmail sent! In moments such as this, what defines us is how we respond.”\n\n“With dignity, with compassion, and with a commitment to one another. Khaleed Oladipo was part of this community. His loss is felt here and beyond.\n\n“Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones. Leicester is a city of strength and resilience. De Montfort University is one of its great institutions. Together, we will continue to uphold the values that bind us, respect, care, responsibility, and peace.”\n\nAttendees were then invited to lay white roses, symbolising remembrance, on the steps leading up to the entrance of the Hawthorne Building. The steps were quickly covered completely with white roses.\n\nVigil goers lay white roses in remembrance of Khaleed Oladipo. Photograph: Kaydon Ifill-Fisher\n\n“There is a bitter irony for us at DMU,” says Katie Normington, “That this comes only weeks after the launch of our safer knife campus campaign.”\n\n“Our research into rounded tip knives shows that they will save lives,” she says. “In due course, we must continue that campaign to reduce the number of pointed knives in Leicester.”\n\nAnother such campaign, which launched in the immediate aftermath of the tragic events at DMU, is the Leicester Gazette's crowdfunder – which aims to fund 10 life-saving public-access bleed kits. These will be placed across the city centre and on the campuses of both universities in the city.\n\nThere is only one emergency bleed control kit in Leicester City Centre (Service Yard A), according to Bleed Map and HeartSafe.\n\nThe kits, which contain products especially for treating major bleeds, can be used in various situations including stabbings, accidental blade wounds, falls and road traffic collisions to name just a few. They are similar to public access defibrillators (PADs).\n\nThe Leicester Gazette will work with local partners, including charities and emergency services, to identify suitable locations for the kits. Donations for the bleed kits can be made below.\n\nHelp provide life-saving bleed kits\n\n****If you enjoyed this article and want more great local journalism, here’s how to get it.****\n\nWe publish investigations, news features and human interest stories that go beyond the headlines.
