"textContent": "Denmark’s Port of Skagen has signed an agreement with PowerCon for a 16 MW shore power facility at quay 9, its cruise berth, in a DKK 85 million project being carried out without European or national subsidies. The installation is expected to be delivered by the end of 2027 and available for cruise calls from the 2028 season.\n\nSkagen is one of Denmark’s three largest cruise ports, where more than 100 cruise calls and up to 250,000 passengers and crew annually are expected in the coming years. Port of Skagen described shore power as a “licence to operate” with the surrounding community and, increasingly, a requirement from shipping companies.\n\n## Quay system clears cable runs from the cruise berth\n\nThe Skagen installation will use an energy-chain system integrated into the quay structure, with ships connecting through a fully electric cable management system. Port of Skagen said the design removes long high-voltage cables from the quay area, supporting passenger movement and giving port operators, service providers, truck traffic and ship suppliers more workable space during calls.\n\nThe design process also addressed electrical noise and cooling noise. Norwegian company Plug - Shore Power, which owns and operates several shore power installations for cruise vessels, contributed to the project’s technical design. Port of Skagen’s board and staff also visited existing shore power facilities during preparations for the project.\n\nHobro, Denmark-based PowerCon has previously delivered shore power facilities in Bergen, Barcelona and Miami. “Most of our projects are located outside Denmark, which makes this assignment particularly special to us, as Skagen is very much our home ground,” said Kim Brondum Larsen, CEO of PowerCon.\n\n## Cruise traffic gives the investment commercial weight\n\nSkagen’s cruise facilities include three berths, with the main facility able to handle ships up to about 400 meters in length and 12 meters of water depth. In 2025, the port recorded 173,745 cruise passengers, of whom 146,293 went ashore in Skagen.\n\nThe port said each cruise guest spends an average of DKK 420. Total visitor spending in Skagen and the rest of North Jutland reached DKK 61 million in 2025, excluding revenue to Port of Skagen and maritime service providers.\n\nThe project also sits against the EU Fit for 55 timetable, which requires major ports to install shore-side electricity by 2030 for relevant vessel types. High-voltage shore connection systems used by larger ships are covered by IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005-1, commonly using 6.6 kV or 11 kV three-phase supply arrangements.\n\n“The future is electric,” said Willy B. Hansen, CEO of Port of Skagen. “Together, we contribute to ensuring that Skagen and Port of Skagen remain an attractive place - for guests, residents and shipping companies alike.”\n\n## Construction moves to grid and quay work\n\nThe construction phase is now starting. It is expected to run for about 18 months. The work includes upgrades to the port’s electrical supply, buried cables, new transformer stations by Nord Energi Net, and foundations and cable ducts for both the shore power installation and the cable management system.",
