  "content": "---\ntitle: \"Laptop Ensemble in the Canberra Times\"\ndescription: \"The ANU Laptop Ensemble got a Canberra Times feature, with encouraging words\n  from the School of Music about code in music-making.\"\ntags:\n  - teaching\n  - reimagine\n  - lens\n---\n\nThe ANU Laptop Ensemble (LENS) is in the Canberra Times this morning:\n[ANU School of Music's new orchestra is far from conventional](https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6412297/anu-school-of-musics-new-orchestra-is-far-from-conventional/).\n\nThere's some really encouraging stuff in there from ANU School of Music head\n[Kim Cunio](https://music.cass.anu.edu.au/people/associate-professor-kim-cunio)\nabout the role of code in music-making:\n\n> \"We want to re-imagine what an orchestra is,\" he says. \"My vision is to train\n> musicians that are part composers, part mathematicians, and part computer\n> hackers.\"\n\nI'm so pumped---this is exactly what I've been trying to do for several years,\nand having Kim on board as an ally is very encouraging. Along with the CECS\nReimagine agenda (including their support of my\n[fellowship](/blog/2019/08/30/im-a-reimagine-fellow/) to put together the\n[c/c/c studio](/blog/2019/03/20/reimagine-fellow-project-pitch/)) and the great\nthings happening [elsewhere](https://soad.cass.anu.edu.au) in\n[CASS](https://cdhr.cass.anu.edu.au), there's good vibes in the air around\ncross-disiplinary code, creativity and culture at the ANU.\n\nThe article ends by saying:\n\n> Cunio hopes experiments with science, maths and technology will also open\n> \"back doors\" into music for a new breed of student.\n>\n> \"Sometimes the best musicians are lost to music.\"\n\nI suspect that sometimes the best computer scientists are lost to CS as well.\nHopefully programs like the LENS can change that.\n",
