"description": "An outstanding directorial debut for Zoë Kravitz. The whole thing plays out as a fever dream that oscillates between abject horror, social commentary and free flowing debauchery. So many movies overplay their attempts at social commentary and end up worse off for it but Kravitz deftly incorporates it, drives the point home and manages to keep the film from getting bogged down by it. Still, touch points abound — from Reels, to objectively awful and questionably empowered tech brows (Tatum's Slater — the arch villain). Rich guy, with rich friends has an island...power dynamics that are fed by both privilege and wealth. The notion that powerful men act contrite, offer an apology and keep doing exactly what they were doing to warrant an apology (but this time on an island). Anyways — Kravitz does a masterful job of building tension, slowly and carefully. Frida grows ever more suspicious, Jess disappears, Sarah shares Frida's suspicions and the two both regain their memories which all sets the stage some climactic and violent revenge. Beautifully shot, well-written, directed and a wonderful cast elevate what is both an ambitious and imperfect movie. Highly recommended.
