"description": "I'll continue to heap praise on Abraham and Franck. This novella sets aside the events of The Mercy of Gods and drops you into the life of a soldier named Kirin who volunteers to be deployed as a Livesuit soldier. There are plenty of points of available comparison, but this fits nicely with The Mercy of Gods , adding a bit of color and context. Volunteer to protect (save and — perhaps — serve) humanity. Leave everyone you love behind as you have a suit grafted to your skin, travel out at speeds faster than light and hope that your sacrifice provides a better life for everyone who will succumb to old age before your tour's up. You won't understand everything you're sacrificing until you've made that sacrifice. You won't know if you're winning or losing, you'll hear disjointed reports from elsewhere in the war that you won't be able to place. Maybe it just happened, maybe it was years ago. You even see Kirin encounter Carryx soldiers without recognizing them for what they are — which leaves me wondering if he, personally, does not recognize them or if the author(s) are hinting at something more. Is Anjiin one front in this war and why would its inhabitants not be aware of the broader war effort? Are the timelines separate? Are they disconnected from the rest of humanity that's waging the war effort? GIVE ME MORE.",
