Problems • Can't set Mapgen "mapgen_limit" past 31,007

For some odd reason the world generation stops at the arbitrary number 31,007. I can't set it any higher (I was trying to get it to 2^16, or 65536), why is that? This is a bizarre problem, and I need an explanation for this.
