The Crop Sensor does not work for trees — it only works for farming plants like wheat. You need the Node Sensor instead.

Correct setup:

• Place the Node Sensor with its red side facing the area where the tree will grow (pointing at the sapling).
• In the Node Sensor's form, set the mode to "added" — a growing tree replaces air with wood/leaves, so nodes are being added.
• Use the connection tool to link the Node Sensor to the Signs Bot Box.
