Torches usually hurt in real-life if you step into them, and a single piece of Crystal or Nether armor gives you fire protection to stop it, also there's a setting in 3d_armor to disable it.

Why is the setting in 3D Armor? I don't think the majority of people actually like the torch fire damage, it's really quite inconvenient when mining in cramped conditions as one would often..

FINALLY somebody points out the obvious! I came from Minecraft, and never had any trouble with torches because they were harmless.
