"textContent": "Why on earth would UK councils fly the flags of foreign nations? Maybe if dignitaries from said countries were visiting, but it seems councils are treating ratepayer-funded flagpoles like Facebook profiles: swapping them for whatever is The Current Thing.\n\nSo, what makes Ukraine’s grifter-in-chief think he’s entitled to demand Ukrainian flags at British town halls?\n\n> Vlodomyr Zelensky has said that “small mistakes can break big friendship” following the decision by Reform UK councils to take down Ukrainian flags from outside town halls.\n>\n> Some Reform-run councils have lowered the Ukrainian flag from their civic buildings which were hoisted in response to Russia’s 2022 invasion, in favour of flying only local flags and the Union flag.\n\nIf nothing else, perhaps they’re merely chary of flying the flags of regimes who valourise Nazis?\n\n> On May 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a decree that a special forces unit of the Ukrainian army was being given the honorary name Heroes of the UPA, explaining that it was “to restore the historical traditions of the national army.”\n>\n> However, the decree has created serious tensions with Poland, one of Ukraine’s most important allies in the war with Russia.\n\nGee, I wonder why?\n\n> After Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, the partisan Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was formed to fight for an independent Ukrainian state – which at first it did as Germany’s ally. In order to drive the Polish population out of regions it claimed for Ukraine, the UPA committed war crimes against ethnic Polish civilians, including the massacres of Poles in Volhynia and eastern Galicia, a region now divided between Poland and Ukraine.\n\nThat is putting it mildly. The UPA adopted an official policy of massacring and ethnically cleansing Poles east of the Bug River. In just one day, the UPA massacred 99 villages. A further 50 were massacred the next day. “Whole families are butchered and hanged, and Polish settlements are set on fire,” wrote one of its own founders.\n\n> “Villages were torched. Roman Catholic priests were axed or crucified. Churches were burned with all their parishioners. Isolated farms were attacked by gangs carrying pitchforks and kitchen knives. Throats were cut. Pregnant women were bayoneted. Children were cut in two. Men were ambushed in the field and led away” – historian **Norman Davies**\n\nUp to 120,000 Poles were massacred by the Ukrainians.\n\nUnderstandably, Poland is none too happy with Zelensky declaring Nazi butchers ‘heroes’.\n\n> “Unfortunately, President Zelenskyy has shown that Ukraine, in terms of mentality – glorifying bandits, murderers from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army – is not ready to be part of the European family,” [President **Karol Nawrocki**] said on May 29 in Warsaw, according to Polish TV channel Polsat. “In the European family, you cannot glorify bandits [who] murdered women and children, murdered Poles.”\n>\n> Nawrocki said he was moving to strip Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honor. The award jury is set to discuss the case on June 8.\n\nSo, yeah, when one of **Vladimir Putin** ’s justifications for invading Ukraine was “de-Nazification”, I guess it’s best not to start turning Nazis into your national heroes.\n\n* * *\n\n💡\n\n****If you enjoyed this article please share it using the share buttons at the top or bottom of the article.****",
