Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has categorically ruled out any grand coalition with Labour, calling the notion “insanity” while he cleans up the previous government’s mess. Winston Peters has done the same. Together they have boxed Labour into a corner with almost no viable paths forward, especially as Te Pāti Māori self-destructs in real time.

WHAT HAPPENED

Luxon shut down speculation hard when asked about partnering with Labour after the next election. He dismissed the idea outright, contrasting National’s approach with Labour’s record of more borrowing, more taxes, more spending and zero delivery. Chris Hipkins reciprocated with equal frostiness, declaring the parties’ values incompatible. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown’s call for a grand coalition to sideline “minor nutters” on both sides landed with a thud. The two major parties have now locked arms in rejection of the concept.
