This self-titled, self-produced, and self-released blues-rocker from Canada’s Johnny Max & His So-Called Friends is a keeper. It’s the eighth Max creation, filled to the brim with hot licks and soulful Max vocals on originals with three covers: T. Graham Brown’s 1998 “Memphis Women & Fried Chicken,” Andy Fraser’s 1975 “Be Good To Yourself” and Ed Rush’s 1957 “Plastic Jesus.” “Might As Well Be On Mars” is a stand-out but all 12 rock with drums, extra percussion, organ, bass, loops, piano, Wurlitzer, guitars, tuba and trumpet.
