Alysa Liu's father is a Chinese national who fled to the United States after being persecuted in China following the Tiananmen Square protests.

China attempted to recruit her to China during the Beijing Olympics, but Alysa refused.

Alysa Liu, 20 (born August 8, 2005)

Her father fled to the US during the Tiananmen Square massacre, and her mother is American, making her of mixed Chinese and American descent.

What's remarkable about Alysa is that she retired from figure skating at 16, went on to study at the prestigious UCLA, and then returned to the sport, winning a gold medal.

She was already a rising star in the US, but winning an Olympic gold medal transformed her into a star!
