General Discussion • Large Rugs for Living Room - Real-Life “Map Design” Tips
Hey all,
Bit of an off-topic thought, but I started looking into large rugs for my living room and realized it’s surprisingly similar to designing a good map or base layout in a game like Minetest (or Luanti as many of you know it now).
A rug basically acts like a “zone anchor.” If it’s too small, everything feels disconnected - kind of like placing structures too far apart without a clear center. From what I’ve learned, sizes like 8x10 or 9x12 work best because they let you place all your “key objects” (sofa, chairs, table) on the same “tile,” making the whole space feel cohesive.
It reminded me of how we design spawn areas or hubs - everything important should sit within a defined space so it feels intentional. A tiny rug under just a table is like a random node in the middle of nowhere
Material-wise, I’m thinking of going practical - something durable and easy to clean, since this is basically a “high-traffic server zone” in real life. But I also like the idea of something with a bit of pattern or texture to give it personality, like adding detail to terrain so it’s not just flat.
Curious if anyone else here has applied their game-design brain to real-life spaces. What “layout rules” do you follow when setting up a room?
