Those are both valid suggestions you could add to the tracker, where you'll get more discussion happening too (sorry, we're kind of fragmented between platforms).

I have just added a feature request on the Luanti GitHub.

Again, consider it my own bias as a Linux user, but in times gone by I would have suggested the .zip, but using directory junctions (or soft/hard links, but junctions were always my preference on Windows, nowadays I am an ex-Windows user).

A symbolic link is a valid option. It needs to be a relative soft symbolic link. I have configured relative symlinks for all these:

  • cache/
  • client/
  • games/
  • mod data/
  • worlds/
  • debug.txt

The issue is that this is limited to the NTFS file system (no FAT32 or ex-FAT USB key can be used). Symbolic links on Windows are not widely known (one reason is that you can only create them using a command line). In Linux, symbolic links are more common (I am a former Linux user, but have been forced to use Windows). Why do you prefer junctions nowadays in Windows rather than Windows soft-links?
