Man convicted in 2010 killing of Montgomery County woman sentenced to 25 years

A man found guilty in the 2010 murder of a Montgomery County woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Jorge Rueda Landeros was convicted of second‑degree murder last November in the killing of 52‑year‑old Sue Marcum. She was found beaten with a liquor bottle and strangled inside her home on Massachusetts Avenue in the Glen Echo area of Bethesda on Oct. 25, 2010.

Prosecutors said Landeros, who taught Marcum yoga and Spanish, developed a romantic relationship with her. They said the two had been drinking from shot glasses before the attack, and Landeros later staged the scene to look like a break‑in and burglary gone wrong.

Marcum was a longtime accounting professor at American University.

FOX 5’s Stephanie Ramirez reports that the judge cited several factors in the sentence, including Landeros’ integral role in the killing, his exploitation of a position of trust, the brutality of the murder, and the fact that he staged the crime and then lived freely for more than a decade.

Landeros has been incarcerated for 1,178 days and will receive credit for time served.
