"textContent": "**Update:** Reached by text message Tuesday night, González said:\n\n> “I’m honored to earn the support of the voters. During my campaign I talked about how our region needs to grow and build housing, nurture a prosperous economy and also protect our clean air and water — and importantly that these things don’t need to be in conflict with each other. I’m eager to work hard to make this the best region in the country to raise a family, grow a business and retire with dignity.”\n\nFive candidates competed for the open Metro Council President seat in Tuesday's primary, with Juan Carlos González drawing well above the 50% threshold needed to win outright in initial results released at 8 p.m.\n\nInitial results showed González at 64.71% (126,972 votes), Chris Christensen at 15.64% (30,695 votes), Ken Ross at 10.54% (20,685 votes), Bruce Broussard at 6.80% (13,337 votes), and Philip Fensterer at 1.63% (3,196 votes), with the remainder cast for write-in candidates.\n\nGonzález was born in Forest Grove, raised in Cornelius, and is a graduate of Forest Grove High School.\n\nThe candidates were:\n\n * **Juan Carlos González** , current Metro councilor for District 4 since 2018 and the frontrunner with every major endorsement\n * **Chris Christensen**\n * **Ken Ross** , president of the SEIU local that represents Tigard city employees\n * **Bruce Broussard** , longtime political-affairs TV show host\n * **Philip Fensterer** , an Oregon Zoo marine life keeper\n\n\n\nThe race is open after former Metro Council President Lynn Peterson stepped down. Metro Council President leads the seven-member Metro Council, the regional government for the urban areas of Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties, with authority over land use, transportation planning, and the Oregon Zoo. The president serves a four-year term.\n\nMetro Council races are nonpartisan. A candidate who receives more than 50% of the vote in the May primary is elected outright. If no candidate clears that threshold, the top two finishers advance to a runoff in the November general election. With González drawing 64.71% in initial results, he is on track to take the office outright in January if the margin holds as additional ballots are counted.\n\nStatewide and regional results are at results.oregonvotes.gov. The latest Washington County results, including the schedule for additional ballot drops, are posted on the Washington County Elections Division current results page.",
