"textContent": "Joan Marie Vandehey, age 83, passed away on April 11, 2026, in Salem, Oregon.\n\nJoan was born on September 6, 1942, in Hillsboro, Oregon. She lived a life marked by kindness, faith, service, and devotion to those she loved. From an early age, Joan knew Monte Vandehey, the love of her life, growing up together before building a life rooted in partnership and enduring affection. They shared six decades of marriage and joyfully celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December 2025—a milestone that reflected a lifetime of commitment, love, and shared faith.\n\nJoan dedicated 30 years of her professional life to the Salem-Keizer School District, where she taught at various elementary grade levels. She was a gifted educator who touched the lives of countless students with her patience, encouragement, and steady guidance.\n\nHer Catholic faith was the cornerstone of Joan’s life. She was an active and devoted member of her church and faithfully served her community through her membership in the Young Ladies’ Institute for more than 55 years. She held many positions in this wonderful charitable organization, but her proudest achievement was being elected Grand President. It gave her great joy to spend the subsequent year visiting all the institutes throughout the country. Her generosity, compassion, and quiet strength were an inspiration to all who knew her.\n\nJoan Marie Vandehey. Photo courtesy of the Vandehey family.\n\nAbove all, Joan cherished her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Monte Vandehey and their four children: Alec (Shannon) Vandehey, Brian (Karin) Vandehey, Lisa (Joe) Lynn, and Amy Vandehey (Roberto Venegas). She also leaves behind her six treasured grandchildren: Jordan and Brooklynn Vandehey, Aliya and Kylee Lynn, Aidan and Maya Venegas.\n\nJoan will be remembered for her warm heart, gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and the love she so freely gave to family, friends, students, and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.\n\nJoan’s funeral service will be held on Monday, April 20, at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy/Cornelius, Oregon (https://sfaroyparish.org). A rosary will be said at 10:30 am, with the mass beginning at 11:00 am. There will be a lunch reception following the mass, and a 2:00 pm grave-side burial service.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Young Ladies’ Institute Marie Dorion 230 in her memory: 1606 Onyx St, NW, Salem, OR, 97304.",
