> Junior engineers are in deep trouble
I think they’re only in trouble if they relied on LLMs so heavily in their learning that they can’t just sit at a computer sans-internet with a mere text editor and compiler/repl and make cool stuff. [1]
Good people are still good people, no matter their level. Hopefully the potentially good ones didn’t deprive themselves of the struggle you need to become good.
Juniors were in trouble in industry before LLMs. In the last half decade, my teams barely hired any juniors. Senior after senior. Which is a shame. I like having junior engineers. They don’t crap out management’s desires very fast, but they improve the team culture hugely.
[1] Also not a new phenomenon specific to LLMs. Lots of “senior” engineers are so tool-addicted you gotta wonder if they can even do this. LLMs are just the super hot tool to be addicted to right now (and for some reason, the C-suite cares about your tools this time? weird!)
