Thanks! Yes, I’m aware - the Chinese room argument (or rather the many critiques of it) is a good example of why I think the “it’s just doing autocomplete” argument is not at all convincing. But yes, I agree there’s a large literature of opinions and arguments here that many smart people have contributed to. I personally don’t think it’s a good idea to avoid anthropomorphic language. It’s useful (not just for whimsical purposes) to say things like “Claude thought I meant “linear” in the sense of linear algebra, but I actually meant it in the sense of linear logic, let me clarify that. I would say that having beliefs and reasoning is (sometimes) a good effective description of what a complicated computer system is doing. Anyway, I don’t want to derail the discussion, so let me leave it there.
