"textContent": "\n\n\nKimi Antonelli produced a statement drive at Silverstone as the Mercedes teenager hunted down Lewis Hamilton to win a thrilling British Grand Prix sprint race.\n\nThe 19-year-old Italian showed patience, pace and precision before passing the Ferrari driver on lap eight, extending his championship lead to 43 points over team-mate George Russell in the process.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nHamilton had started strongly and defended bravely at the front, but Antonelli always looked the quicker man once the race settled after a chaotic opening phase.\n\nBehind the leaders, Lando Norris, Russell and Max Verstappen were involved in a frantic early scrap as the order changed repeatedly during the opening laps.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nTRENDING\n\nStories\n\nVideos\n\nYour Say\n\nNorris made the most of the chaos, charging from sixth on the grid to fourth by the end of the first lap before getting ahead of Russell soon afterwards.\n\nBut while the chasing pack fought among themselves, Antonelli kept his focus fixed on Hamilton.\n\nThe Mercedes driver initially tried to make a move at Brooklands at the end of the Wellington Straight, only for Hamilton to hold firm and keep his Ferrari ahead.\n\nAntonelli did not panic. Instead, he waited for the right moment, saved his battery power and then launched his decisive attack on the Hangar Straight.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nWith the wind blowing hard down the back straight, the Mercedes came alive as Antonelli swept past Hamilton and took control of the race.\n\nFrom there, the teenager managed the gap superbly and never looked likely to surrender victory.\n\n\"It was a very fun first 10 laps with Lewis,\" Antonelli said.\n\n\"We were both pushing very hard. When I got into overtake (mode), I knew my chance was coming.\n\n### LATEST SPORTS NEWS:\n\n\n\n\n * England's World Cup preparations thrown into chaos as Mexico fans abuse players after hotel leak\n * Venus Williams could face £37,500 fine after snub at Wimbledon\n * England and Mexico World Cup match facing fresh delay as FIFA holds talks over thunderstorm threat\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n\"When I got alongside in Brooklands he used the boost and I decided to wait and then I got close and used everything.\"\n\nHamilton admitted afterwards that Ferrari had been unable to contain Mercedes' straight-line threat.\n\n\"Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind, as I said it might be,\" Hamilton said.\n\n\"And with it being so windy today, big headwind down the back straight, he came flying past. We have work to do to try and close that gap as we can keep up.\"\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nNorris eventually secured third after an impressive drive in front of the home crowd, clearing Russell and moving away from the battle behind him.\n\n\"It was a very good race,\" the McLaren driver said.\n\n\"I'm very, very happy, good start, good first lap, not the pace to go with these guys but had a good battle with George. Pleasantly surprised.\"\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nRussell recovered to pass Verstappen on lap nine, with the Red Bull driver then losing another place to Charles Leclerc one lap later.\n\nVerstappen was forced to settle for sixth after holding off Oscar Piastri in the closing stages.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nFurther back, Liam Lawson resisted late pressure from Isack Hadjar as the pair claimed the final points positions.\n\nAttention now turns to qualifying for Sunday's British Grand Prix, which takes place at 4pm on Saturday.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n**Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter**",
