Lily Allen furiously hits back after facing complaints over West End Girl tour: 'My artistic choice!'

Lily Allen has responded after a concertgoer's critical review of her latest O2 Arena performance went viral, garnering over four million views on X.

The singer is currently bringing the UK leg of her Lily Allen Performs West End Girl tour to a close.

Unlike a traditional greatest hits concert, the theatrical performance sees Ms Allen perform her latest album from start to finish without audience interaction, with the show designed to immerse fans in the record's emotional narrative.

However, one attendee claimed the evening offered poor value for money, prompting the Smile singer to publicly defend herself.

The singer-songwriter, who shot to fame in 2006 on MySpace, quickly disputed several of the claims, insisting the evening had unfolded exactly as advertised.

"There is a support act," she bluntly replied.

"The show has always been advertised as 'Lily Allen Performs West End Girl'.

"I was a few mins late as my tights were laddered and I had to change them.

"The show is just over an hour as it's just the album in its entirety.

"It's my artistic choice not to talk to the audience, the fourth wall helps with the storytelling. Most people find it to be effective."

The singer concluded: "I don't want anyone to feel ripped off. Everyone on this tour is really working very hard to give people the best show we possibly can, and I'm extremely proud of it."

Her response quickly divided opinion online.

One critic replied: "Artistic choice not to talk to the audience? Just out of curiosity, do you know what a thoroughly pompous jerk that makes you sound?"

Another wrote: "Oh come on, you don't do this out of love for your fans, you do this to make money. 100%."

A third added: "Wow. A response like that to a fan who paid money to watch is pretty poor form."

Another questioned the value of the performance, commenting: "Be so for real. Charging £90 for a 50 minute concert/show is a joke. Not even West End shows charge that much for that small of a show."

However, many concertgoers leapt to Ms Allen's defence.

"I saw the show last night and it is a spellbinding piece of art… no justification for the content or form is necessary… thanks for your honesty and bravery, the performance was superb and I loved it," one supporter wrote.

Another added: "Exactly as advertised and a nice change from loud, sweaty concerts. It plays exactly as the album plays AND the story that the album tells. No need for talking, the songs do that for you."

A third penned: "The orchestra / sing along was SO fun!" (sic)

Ms Allen's deeply personal record chronicles the breakdown of her marriage to Hollywood actor David Harbour and has been described by the singer as "blending fact and fiction".

Rather than mixing in older chart hits, Ms Allen said she has chosen to perform the album in full behind a "fourth wall", allowing the narrative to unfold uninterrupted.

The singer is currently completing the UK and European leg of the tour, with her final British arena performance taking place at London's O2 Arena before heading to festival appearances across Europe.

She will then embark on North American dates in September, before concluding the tour with shows in Australia and New Zealand later this year.
