Eleven people killed in skydiving plane crash in France

Eleven people have been killed after a plane carrying skydivers crashed in France.

The crash took place in a town called Tomblaine, near the city of Nancy.

The plane was carrying a group of skydivers, with five students alongside five instructors, local officials have confirmed.

Emergency services are currently on the scene.

The pilot of the aircraft was also killed in the crash.

Reports have claimed that three people were thrown from the aircraft.

Thierry Pechey, president of the Meurthe-et-Moselle branch of the Order of Independent Nurses, is on site, local media have confirmed.

A safety perimeter has been place around the scene.

The Meurthe-et-Moselle prefecture posted a message on social media stating: "An incident is currently underway in the municipality of Tomblaine involving a civil aircraft that took off from Nancy-Essey aerodrome.

"Yves SÉGUY, prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, has decided to activate the departmental operational center (COD) in the presence of all operational services in order to ensure real-time monitoring of the event.

"The prefect is on site."

Meurthe-et-Moselle national police posted on X, saying: "Imperatively avoid the Salvador Allende Street area entirely.

"To keep access clear for emergency services and law enforcement, do not go to the scene. Thank you for facilitating their intervention."

French media are reporting the plane that crashed as a Pilatus, that was registered in Germany.

The Pilatus is commonly used for parachute jumps.

Local news outlet France3 has said: “The human toll is believed to be very high, and the risk of the aircraft exploding is significant.

"Two emergency medical teams have just left the site with flashing lights."

The Minister of the Interior is expected to hold a press conference later today.

No official confirmation has been given yet as to the cause of the crash.
