Greggs has extended the number of temporary store closures due to the ongoing heat wave, with temperatures rising to as high as 37 degrees celsius

The Met Office has issued a red heat warning for central southern England and the south-east of the UK until 9pm tonight.

Other parts of England, such as the West Midlands, will be under an amber alert until midnight.

Due to the extension of the red weather warning, Greggs has confirmed all the stores that are already temporarily closed will remain so.

According to the bakery chain, impacted stores have been shut down for the time being "to protect its customers and colleagues during the severe hot weather".

As it stands, 11 Greggs stores across the UK have not reopened since Wednesday morning and were originally set to open by end of the week.

Based on Met Office data, temperatures had reached 36.7 degrees celsius in Merryfield, Somerset, on Thursday, provisionally making it the UK’s hottest June day on record.

It is expected that temperatures will start to drop to around normal UK summer levels by Sunday, but more heatwaves are expected in 2026.
