"textContent": "\n\n\n\nThe Danish government is considering whether to restrict or ban the public broadcasting of the Islamic call to prayer.\n\nCritics have condemned the proposal as discriminatory and incompatible with religious freedom.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nAs a non-practising Muslim, I see it differently.\n\nThe Islamic call to prayer holds deep religious significance for many Muslims.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nTRENDING\n\nStories\n\nVideos\n\nYour Say\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nRespecting that fact, however, does not require every country to incorporate it into public life.\n\nDenmark is not a Muslim country. It is a democratic nation with its own history, traditions and cultural identity.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nLike any sovereign state, it has the right to decide how religion is expressed in public spaces and which customs become part of its public culture.\n\nWestern societies have shown remarkable openness towards religious diversity.\n\n### LATEST DEVELOPMENTS\n\n\n\n\n * I asked Trump about our next PM. His answer is worse than GB News viewers might think – Bev Turner\n * The King of the North has a lot to say, but now the real Andy Burnham to stand up - Paul Embery\n * Trump's Iran deal isn't a surrender. It proves America is finally getting smart in the Middle East – Dr Azeem Ibrahim\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nAcross Europe, Muslims are free to build mosques, pray openly, observe Ramadan, wear religious clothing and raise their children according to their faith.\n\nThose freedoms are fundamental and should remain protected.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nPublic broadcasting is different. Every society sets boundaries around what is amplified in shared spaces.\n\nDeciding where those boundaries lie is a matter for democratic debate, not a sign of intolerance.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nThere is also an inconsistency in how these discussions are often framed.\n\nIn a number of Muslim-majority countries, public expressions of other faiths face restrictions, and church bells are either limited or absent altogether.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nFew people expect those countries to abandon their religious or cultural norms.\n\nYet, when a European nation seeks to preserve its own traditions and character, it is frequently accused of discrimination.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nCountries should be welcoming to newcomers, but integration cannot be a one-way process.\n\nPeople who settle in a country inevitably adapt to aspects of the society they have chosen to join. That is not oppression. It is how successful, cohesive societies function.\n\n###\n\n\nNone of this prevents Muslims from practising Islam. Mosques will remain open. Prayers will continue. Religious freedom will endure. What is being debated is whether a particular religious practice should be broadcast into the public square. As a non-practising Muslim, I have no difficulty respecting Islam while also believing that Denmark has the right to make this decision for itself.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n**Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter**",
