Lizzie Cundy reignites Ascot dress row as she demands rules rethink: 'Fashion has changed!'

Lizzie Cundy has called for Royal Ascot to revise its dress code regulations following her removal from the prestigious racing event earlier in the week.

The People's Channel contributor was refused entry on the opening day of Royal Ascot after officials deemed her netted outfit with a revealing back slit to be in breach of the strict attire requirements.

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, the 58-year-old pushed back against the decision, maintaining that her ensemble was not as daring as it appeared and urging organisers to modernise their guidelines to reflect contemporary fashion trends.

Defending her choice of attire, the television personality insisted the cream midi dress featured a beige lining beneath the netted fabric, creating merely an illusion of transparency.

"Listen, I'm going to say a galloping jockey could see that that dress wasn't see-through," she told presenters.

"The dress had like a beigey underlay underneath, and I'll be honest Kate, I don't think you've seen me with so many clothes on."

Host Kate Garraway expressed agreement, noting it was the most conservative she had ever witnessed Ms Cundy dress.

Ms Garraway admitted that upon hearing about the controversy, she expected something far more revealing, only to find the outfit appeared perfectly acceptable to her eye.

Despite offering an apology for the incident, Ms Cundy remained adamant that the event's regulations require updating to keep pace with evolving fashion.

"I didn't follow the rules, but well, I thought actually I did follow the rules, and I got a bit of a slap on the wrist, and I have said sorry.

"I am sorry, but I do believe particularly the races, it is all about the fashion," she explained.

The television personality argued that organisers were being overly strict, given current world events.

"I'm sorry, fashions change, we need to have the Ascot rules reviewed yearly as fashion looks change through the seasons.

"We need it updated," she declared, adding that she enjoys expressing her personality through her clothing choices.

Etiquette expert Laura Windsor offered a different perspective during the programme, noting that Royal Ascot's dress code requirements are clearly published online and can be followed whilst still maintaining a fashionable appearance.

"I'm a personal stylist as well, so I understand Lizzie wanting to show her personality through her clothes, but unfortunately, it did look a little bit see-through, probably because of that skin colored camisole underneath," Ms Windsor explained.

The Royal Enclosure maintains particularly stringent guidelines, explicitly prohibiting sheer materials and sheer straps, with midriffs required to be fully covered at all times.

Revealing or transparent designs can result in guests being refused entry at the gates.

Viewers were quick to take to social media to share their thoughts on the debate.

YouTube star Louise Pentland commented on Instagram: "I think it's quite nice to have a dress code for certain things."

Another person wrote: "It needs rules otherwise everyone looks like they're going clubbing and it's supposed to be a formal event."

"Nothing wrong with dressing smart, I like the Ascot tradition," a third viewer penned.

However, others jumped to the defence of the star.

"I like Lizzie!" one person wrote, as another insisted that Ms Cundy's dress "doesn't offend me at all".
