Morrisons confirms store closure locations as 100 shops to be axed - full list here

Morrisons has confirmed the location of some stores it has earmarked for closure after announcing plans to axe 100 shops this year.

Last month, the supermarket giant revealed it would close 100 of its Morrisons Daily high street stores as part of its latest restructuring efforts.

It is understood the stores considered at risk are shops that were introduced as part of Morrisons' acquisition of numerous McColl’s locations in 2022.

In 2024, an estimated 132 corner shops were converted into Morrisons Daily stores to save those locations from going under.

Following this development, the location of seven Morrisons Daily stores earmarked for closure has now been unveiled.

While not all the impacted branches have been confirmed, the so-far confirmed stores appear to be based in North and East Riding, Yorkshire, The Sun reports.

In response to concerns over job losses, the supermarket chain stated it was consulting with staff most at risk and would try to place as many employees as possible elsewhere in the company.

A spokesperson said: "We will work hard to mitigate the impact on customers, continuing to serve them through other nearby stores and online.

"The performance of all company-owned stores across our Convenience business is subject to continuous review,

"This process has identified several stores, which were part of the McColl’s acquisition, whose performance has been challenged for a number of years and which are loss-making, despite remedial action."

Molly Monks F.I.P.A., insolvency specialist at Parker Walsh, said: "The transformation of retail was already underway but the cost of living crisis has dramatically accelerated the closure of stores that might otherwise have survived another few years.

"Discretionary spending has collapsed in many categories and footfall on high streets outside major city centres remains stubbornly below pre-pandemic levels."
