"textContent": "\n\n\nTwo men who drove at 139mph in a 3mph zone have been sentenced to 23 years in prison following a fatal car crash.\n\nPolice claimed it was one of the worst scenarios of speeding they have ever seen. While driving at extreme speeds, the men were on their phones, filmed videos and inhaled nitrous oxide.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nDriver Uways Hussain, 20, and passenger Usmon Mahmood, 23, were handed their sentences at Manchester Crown Court today.\n\nHussain was driving a VW Golf GTI, which belonged to the passenger, and crashed into another vehicle, killing 50-year-old Sylvester Abayomi in the early hours of March 9, the court heard.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nTRENDING\n\nStories\n\nVideos\n\nYour Say\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nThe fatal crash took place at the junction of Green End Road and Kingsway in the city at 4.30am.\n\nDenise Doyle, who was Mr Abayomi's partner, told the court: \"Sylvester was simply on his way to work.\n\n\"An ordinary hard-working man. He should have returned home to me safely that day. Because of your actions he never did.\"\n\nShe added that Mr Abayomi was left to \"die alone\" and failed to show him \"even a shred of compassion or humanity\".\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nHussain was sentenced to 11 years and eight months detention after admitting causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving while uninsured, and failing to provide a specimen.\n\nHe previously indicated a guilty plea at the magistrates court.\n\nMahmood was also thrown behind bars for 12 years and nine months for aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving and aiding and abetting causing death by driving while uninsured.\n\nAt first, he told officers he attempted to warn Hussain about his driving - and then pleaded guilty.\n\n### CRIME - READ MORE:\n\n\n\n\n * Canadian 'poison seller' linked to 112 deaths of Britons pleads guilty to aiding suicide\n * Teenage rapists who filmed attacks on girls, 14 and 15, fined just £26 each\n * Brothers accused of assaulting police at Manchester Airport will not face a retrial\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nJudge Nicholas Dean KC said: \"It was a sustained, deliberate and escalating course of highly dangerous conduct over a prolonged period.\n\n\"I have seen CCTV images and video recordings on phones and they are terrifying.\n\n\"You drove at extreme speeds, seemingly up to very nearly 140mph, on roads which were by and large subject to 30mph speed limits, far, far in excess of any safe or lawful limit.\"\n\nThe judge went on to declare that it was \"deliberate risk-taking, seemingly for the thrill of it\".\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nProsecutor Rachel Shenton said: \"The Golf was driven by the first defendant, Uways Hussain. His friend Usmon Mahmood, the front seat passenger, was heard at times earlier on to be shouting encouragement.\"\n\nAfter the crash, Hussain's Apple watch called 999 after it detected he had been in a car accident.\n\nIn the \"chilling\" recording, which the judge said did not reveal any \"shock or concern\" for the victim, the pair could be heard talking about claling and Uber to flee the scene - and then report their car as stolen.\n\nThe pair left the scene of the crime and fled from officers before their arrest.\n\n###\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n**Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter**",
