Met Office records hottest ever May day as 35C heatwave hits London

Today is the hottest day in May on record as temperatures have reached 35C in parts of London, the Met Office has confirmed.

The temperature has provisionally reached 35C in Heathrow and Kew Gardens in the capital.

There is currently an amber health warning in the south west, south east, London, east of England and east and west Midlands and will remain until Thursday at 5pm.

Meanwhile, the Met Office issued a separate yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across England on Tuesday, with potential for as much as 30mm of rainfall.

Yesterday, temperatures reached 34.8C at Kew Gardens in west London.

The previous May peak had stood since 1922 when Camden Square experinced a high of 32.8C.

A Met Office spokesman said: "We've now exceeded that record on consecutive days by a full two degrees Celsius."
