Ferrari unveils first electric car with 329-mile battery range and huge £475,000 price tag

Ferrari has officially unveiled its first electric car as the supercar brand looks to disrupt the EV market with the new Luce.

On the 79th anniversary of Ferrari's Gran Premio di Roma victory at the Baths of Caracalla circuit, the Italian automaker has revealed its first look at the Luce electric car.

The highly anticipated electric car has been described as "opening a new chapter in the history of the Prancing Horse".

Ferrari's new Luce model will come packed with four electric-traction engines with electrically-controlled active suspension and a four-wheel steering system.

Drivers who are lucky enough to get their hands on the Ferrari Luce will be welcomed with staggering acceleration, taking the car from 0-100km/h in just 2.5 seconds.

The best-in-class performance also sees the vehicle accelerate from 0-200km/h in less than seven seconds, in addition to a top speed of more than 310/km/h.

A high-capacity 122kWh battery provides a maximum total power output of 1,050 horsepower and an electric range of 530km or 329 miles.

Each wheel, which is powered by an electric engine, will also feature an actuator for traction and regeneration, namely for the steering wheel, and to control vertical movement.

Motorists are able to order the Ferrari Luce immediately, with prices starting at €550,000 or just over £475,000.

For any petrolheads concerned about losing the roar of the engine, Ferrari has also made sure the Luce EV captures the essence of a supercar.

A precision accelerometer at the centre of the axle is designed to "capture the dynamic texture and vibration of the rotating components while the sound waves are moving".

Ferrari has likened the technology to an electric guitar, with the system filtering, equalising and amplifying sound when functional to the driving experience.

John Elkann, President of Ferrari, said: "With Ferrari Luce, we are once again redefining the limits of what is possible.

"Today, we are not simply unveiling a new car, we are inaugurating a chapter that turns our vision into reality, strengthening Ferrari’s tradition of anticipating and shaping the future."

He highlighted Ferrari's partnership with design studio LoveFrom, led by the legendary Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson.

Mr Elkann noted that the EV had been achieved through "process innovation" by Sir Ive, who designed the iPod and iPhone, and Mr Newson, who has previously worked with the likes of Ford, Swarovski, Qantas and Louis Vuitton.

While the Luce is the first electric Ferrari, the iconic Italian manufacturer will continue producing existing powertrains as part of its lineup.

This was emphasised by Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna, who stated that the brand was the first in the world to combine electric, hybrid and combustion engine architectures for sports cars.

He continued, saying: "We are convinced that a company demonstrates its leadership when it has the courage to dare and to take on the challenge of new technologies.

"We have not limited ourselves to innovation in powertrains; with Luce, we have launched a whole new segment in our range. This model is the result of more than 60 of our new patents and lies at the heart of an ecosystem of collaborations with outstanding technology partners."
